BMS - Building Management Systems

Building Management Systems (BMS) give building engineers or managers control of mechanical & electrical (M&E) equipment at the touch of a button.

In very simple terms, a BMS is a computer-based control system that is used to monitor and control the M&E equipment within a building ensuring optimum levels of efficiency and economy. They typically incorporate the heating system, air handling and cooling plant, Fan Coil/ VAV Units and lighting and can vary greatly in size and complexity. They can be found in many buildings or estates including commercial office buildings, data centres, hospitals, museums and galleries, schools and even large domestic premises.

A BMS may be specified to improve comfort in a building; reduce energy costs; reduce maintenance; and monitor and control plant centrally or remotely. Guidance on BMS specification and controls is available from BSRIA, CIBSE, BRE and HVCA publications.
